DIY Wedding: Beginning skirt construction

For the skirt I initially drafted it as a simple pencil by following this tutorial by ‘Sewing For A Living’.

Drawing out the skirt pattern

I slightly altered it by making the skirt pieces line up with my corset seams. I cut out the mockup in polyester satin and tried it on and was pleasantly surprised that it seemed to work well. I was able to borrow a dressform from my coworker’s wife and expanded it to fit my measurements almost perfectly, she just needed a little cushion on the booty.

It is ridiculously nice actually being able to see what I have created so far without having to put it on and off of myself! Having the dressform was so essential, I have no clue how I would have done the draping of the train otherwise.

Here you see how much my darling kitty, Eartha, wants to help…

So from the initial pencil skirt I inserted the triangle panels, or godets, to flare out at just over the knee. I will then take the skirt appart and retrace each piece onto my pattern paper. Next time I’ll be making my first official cuts out of my wedding dress fabric. It is both exciting and terrifying!
